Just Do Decking

We do wood, beautifully.
Chapter Ⅰ — The Grain

First, the wood is read.

Every board tells you where it wants to live. Admire has been listening to timber since 1995 — a pencil line is a promise.

Chapter Ⅱ — The Cut

A shaving thin enough to see through.

No factory. No production line. One plane, one edge, and twenty-five years of knowing exactly how much to take away.

Chapter Ⅲ — The Threshold

The workshop ends. Your garden begins.

From the bench to the backyard — the board is carried into Somerset West daylight, to the space you've been dreaming of.

Chapter Ⅳ — The Build

Board by board, flush and true.

Stainless clips. A level bubble dead centre. A deck is a thousand small decisions made properly, one after another.

Chapter Ⅴ — The Handover

Then the craftsman steps away.

Because the work isn't for him. It's for barefoot evenings, braai smoke through the trees, and the life a deck is built to hold.

The Craftsman

Twenty-five years, one pair of hands.

Admire apprenticed with Murray & Roberts in 1995, in an era when a joint was checked with a fingertip and a plane was sharpened before breakfast. Years at Woodlab honed the craft; Cape Town Carpentry proved he could carry it alone.

For the last five years he has done one thing, deliberately: Just Do Decking — a specialist wooden decking business in Somerset West that installs, restores and maintains decks the way they were built a generation ago, with materials chosen to outlive their invoices.

“Fair money, for great work. Neither cheap nor expensive — always excellent.”

What we do

Five services. One standard.

01

Wooden Decking Installation

Design, subframe, and hardwood boards fitted flush with hidden stainless fixings — built to be barefoot-proof for decades.

02

Maintenance & Restoration

Grey, weathered boards brought back to their original golden warmth — sanded, treated, and resealed by hand.

03

Composite Decking

Premium low-maintenance composite, laid with the same care as hardwood — clean lines, zero visible fixings.

04

Pergolas

Timber structures that throw beautiful geometric shade — built square, braced properly, finished to match your deck.

05

Outside Cladding

Exterior timber cladding that wraps a building in warmth — weather-detailed for the Cape's winters.

The wood we choose — and why

We don't stock a catalogue. We hold opinions.

Balau hardwood decking close-up

Balau the workhorse aristocrat

Dense, reddish-brown, and nearly indifferent to weather. Balau is what we reach for when a deck must shrug off two decades of Cape sun and winter rain. Heavy grain, deep colour when oiled — it simply refuses to quit.

Garapa hardwood decking close-up

Garapa the golden one

Honey-gold with a fine, even grain that feels almost polished underfoot. Garapa runs cooler in full sun and ages to a quiet silver if you let it — or keeps its glow with an annual oil. The elegant choice.

Premium composite decking close-up

Composite the low-maintenance modern

For clients who want weekends, not sanding. Premium composite boards with hidden clips give a seamless, splinter-free surface that only ever needs a wash — laid over a hardwood-grade subframe, because the bones still matter.

What our clients say
★★★★★
“We contracted Admire and his team to build a wooden deck outside under the trees in our garden, complete with a braai area. His team and their craftsmanship was incredible. An absolute pleasure to deal with.”
